AskAway Reference Services, UBC
UBC Library is seeking 4 Graduate Academic Assistants (GAAs) to provide virtual reference service via
AskAway to students, faculty and staff at post-secondary institutions across BC.
AskAway is a province-wide service, coordinated by the BC Electronic Library Network and funded by the BC Ministry of Advanced Education and BCcampus. The service is staffed by the 27 participating institutions; UBC contributes approximately 35 hours per week, 15 of which are staffed by GAAs.

Hours
GAAs will work 3-6 hours per week to fill the following shifts during the summer (May 7 to Aug. 3): Mondays 6-9pm, Thursday 6-9pm, Sundays 11am to 8pm. Training will occur in late April or early May. Preference may be given to applicants who can continue to work on
AskAway during the fall.
The Position
The Graduate Academic Assistant will:
Provide virtual reference service to students, faculty and staff at 27 post-secondary institutions in BC
Assist users with resources and services that are available at their home institutions
Make referrals where appropriate
Qualifications
Applicants must have completed at least one term in the MLIS program, and must be familiar with the UBC Library system and its online resources and services. Preference will be given to those with reference or teaching experience, ideally in an academic setting. Competence with the Web and a comfort with new technologies are essential. Excellent written and oral communication skills, initiative, and ability to work independently are required. Reliability and flexibility in covering shifts is essential.

Reference, David Lam Library
The David Lam Library, UBC Library, is seeking a Graduate Academic Assistant to provide reference services at the Branch’s reference desk. The salary for this position is $17.42 per hour, including holiday pay ($16.75 less 4% vacation pay). The closing date for this posting is Friday, April 6, 2007.
Hours
This position begins with an orientation session in late August or early September of 2007 and continues through April 2008. Hours will generally be 4-10 per week, for a total of 120 hours. These hours will be scheduled for week days between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and will vary during the term. The distribution of hours may be unequal during the two terms, with more hours being required during October. The library will need extra coverage during a week in late October, 2007 to accommodate the teaching schedules of the David Lam Library reference librarians.
The Position
The Graduate Academic Assistant – Reference will:
Provide reference service using the library’s catalogue, electronic and online resources, library subject and course guides, government publications, and microform collections
Assist users at the reference desk with the Library’s web site and related library services.
Work closely with the branch librarians to update online and print subject and course materials, as needed.
Assist branch librarians with other projects as time permits.
May be invited to participate in teaching opportunities, either in-class or in-library instruction.
Qualifications
Applicants must have completed at least one term in the MLIS program and must be familiar with the UBC Library system and its online resources. Preference will be given to those who have reference experience, public service experience and an academic background in business or economics. Excellent oral and written communication skills, initiative, flexibility, and ability to work both independently and in a team are required. Competence with searching and using online resources, including free web-based materials and proprietary electronic resources is essential. Reliability and flexibility in covering shifts is essential. Teaching experience, skill and ability are important.
