Why use RSS?

What is RSS?

An RSS file is basically a list of headlines encoded so that it can be easily read or displayed by another program or website. RSS is usually said to stand for "Really Simple Syndication." It is increasingly becoming popular with users who want to manage the flow of information or news on a subject, to manage listserv email accounts, or who want an easy way to display dynamic content on their webpages.

For the basics on reading and adding feeds to this aggregator, you can't beat this fine Blogline Tutorial

If you prefer a client, NetNewsWire is the most popular program for Mac users. There is no such clear-cut favorite for PC users, though Sharpreader and Feeddemon are popular choices.

Browser support:

Safari
Firefox and Live Bookmarks
SAGE -- Firefox plugin
Flock - a fork off of Firefox, has a nifty built-in RSS reader
Google Reader -- Good screencast

Finding RSS Feeds

See: Things you can do with RSS

Useful Feeds
CBC
BBC
RSS @ the UBC Library
University of Alberta new books by subject
Amazon.com
Most craigslist categories support RSS feeds
Yahoo News supports feeds for categories and defined searches.
Topix.net - scours mostly from established news sources.
PubSub - emphasizes the world of weblogs.
Technorati - another site for weblogs

Look for orange/blue XML, RSS, RDF icons

Bloglines offers a (mostly tech-oriented) list of most popular feeds. Once you've begun to add feeds, the "My Recommendations" link will recommend similar feeds...

If you have installed the "Subscribe to Bloglines" button on your toolbar -- click Help, then easy Subscribe. Clicking the toolbar command scans the page your browser is on. and will find and add the feed automatically...

Collections

Search:

From Bloglines email subscriptions page

You can create an unlimited number of special Bloglines email addresses that are tied to your Bloglines account. The email addresses show up as subscriptions in your My Blogs page, and email sent to those email addresses appears as new items.

When you create a Bloglines email address, a subscription is added to your account. If you unsubscribe from that subscription, the email address becomes invalid and mail sent to it will bounce.

Email subscriptions are great for announce-only or broadcast mailing lists that don't provide RSS feeds. They are also useful as temporary email addresses.
